Press announcement: Public hearings: "introduction of OST for HIV prevention in Kazakhstan"

Aktau, Kazakhstan - On April 19, 2016, the Aman-sauliq PF in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republican Center for AIDS Prevention and Control with the support of the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) conduct public hearings in the city of Aktau within the framework of the project "Introduction of OST for HIV prevention in Kazakhstan".

Within the framework of the project "Prospects for the development of opioid substitution treatment (OST) in the Republic of Kazakhstan" in 2015, the Aman-sauliq PF in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republican Center for AIDS Prevention and Control with the support of the United Nations Office on Drugs and crime conducted public hearings on the OST program in ten cities where a pilot project is being implemented.

The results of the regional public hearings were discussed at a conference organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on December 11, 2015 in Astana, where recommendations were adopted on the introduction of OST in Kazakhstan, which were sent to the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, RK, Security Council of RK, General Prosecutor's Office of RK.

The purpose of the public hearings is to discuss the situation with HIV infection in full and introduce OST in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Representatives of the expert and medical community, heads of health departments, education, heads of the Regional Center for AIDS Prevention and Control, Narcological Dispensary, law enforcement bodies , maslikhat deputies, NGO representatives, patients will take part in the public hearings. relatives of patients who are addicted.

Similar public hearings on supportive treatment for drug users in order to prevent HIV infection and reduce drug addiction among injecting drug users in the Republic of Kazakhstan are planned to be held in the cities of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Almaty, Aktau and Atyrau. Public hearings on the introduction of opioid substitution therapy in the Republic of Kazakhstan have already taken place in Shymkent.
