Atyrau hosted the ceremony of honoring the semifinalists of the "Zharkyra" contest

Atyrau, Kazakhstan - On April 14th, 2017, the ceremony of honoring social entrepreneurs who won the first round of Zharkyra contest was held. The ceremony was attended by representatives of Tengizchevroil, EFCA, media, akimat, NPP, Damu Foundation. The competition was held within the framework of the Social Entrepreneurship Development Program in Atyrau and Zhylyoi District, implemented by the Eurasia Foundation of Central Asia with the financial support of Tengizchevroil LLP through social investment projects.

The program started in February with four-day orientation seminars on social entrepreneurship, in which 200 people took part. At the same time, the competition "Zharkyra" was launched. It is taking place for the second year in the region and supports businesses with a social mission, helping society to solve pressing problems for the region. The first round of the competition received 70 concepts of business ideas. They were evaluated by 8 experts in the field of business development, social entrepreneurship, and NGO sector from Russia and Kazakhstan. As a result, 25 winners of the first round of the contest were selected and the winners' list was published on the EFCA website. Among the selected projects 10 were from the city of Atyrau and 15 - from Zhylyoi district.

"This year, among the semifinalists, most projects were about child and adult education, work with vulnerable groups (people with disabilities, unemployed women and the elderly) (8) as well as the projects aimed at the environment (4), and a project for the development of folk crafts, sports, and medicine. I wonder whether this corresponds to today's social needs of Atyrau and Kulsary. Does it refect the real situation in the society? "- says the manager of the EFCA Program, Aigul Tagatova.

At the ceremony, the semi-finalists of the contest received certificates for accelerated program for the development of business skills. Accelerated program will consist of four trainings - marketing and sales, finance, strategic planning, and public speaking skills. The total cost of trainings, not including expenses for organization, is KZT3,750,000.

It is expected that the participants of the program will finalize their applications to the level of business plans and take part in the final round of the contest. The conetst winners will receive interest-free loans for the implementation of their social business projects and will have a professional internship and experience exchange in other regions of Kazakhstan or in Russia. In 2016, six socially-oriented businesses were supported. They are successfully developing because they have significantly improved their business performance and now have provided services to more than 9,000 residents of Atyrau and Zhylyoi District. Three participants of the 2016 accelerated program received financing, and two more - additional investments.

The Zharkyra program provides the whole cycle of support for social entrepreneurs: selection of applications, training, competition for obtaining funding for projects, exchange of experience, and mentoring. Social entrepreneurship is a business with a social mission that helps society to solve actual problems in an innovative way. It has long been practiced in various countries to effectively solve the acute problems of society by the citizens themselves. Supporting social entrepreneurship is helping the state solve social problems; it is smart charity, it is the realization of ideas of active and not indifferent citizens.
