A lesson for the teacher

As part of the "3.2.1. - START! " project, a training was held for 30 rural physical education teachers. The journalists from Vlast magazine visited the classes and realized that these trainings are needed not only in the countryside, but also in cities, not only for teachers, but also for parents of schoolchildren.

Two hours after the start of the training, a yellow jacket flashed past the entrance to the gym- Gulmira Sapargalieva, a teacher of physics and physical education from the neighboring village, came in. During the break, we spoke with a woman, who told us that her car broke down and that she walked for 2.5 hours she walked to Sarybau, and then hitchhiked twice. It took two and a half hours on a country road in order to hear trainers from Almaty. I have no other illustration of the importance of this training for rural physical education teachers.

This training is long-awaited. Even in its initial stages, when the Coca-Cola Company studied the needs of rural schools, it became clear that the aid would not be limited to material aid alone. It is not enough to give schools the necessary equipment; it is critical to teach physical education teachers new methods. Due to the fact that, in recent years, some schools did not receive any equipment, physical education teachers focused mainly on game sports: football, basketball, and volleyball. In addition, many experienced teachers left, and in their place came young ones — who saw sports equipment as patched-up Soviet-era gym mats.

Back in early August, Coca-Cola helped 19 schools in the Arshaly district. At the end of the month, it came time for the training, which took two days. He passed at the Sarioba school, in which the company completely replaced the floor. Elena Kun and Rosa Aldongarova, expert trainers from the Fidelity Club, worked with rural physical education teachers.

Earlier Saturday morning: in a gym, 31 physical education teachers from 28 schools in the Arshaly region of the Akmola Oblast. Everyone was warned in advance to come in sporting attire and comfortable shoes, but many came in jeans and shoes. I understood why this happened only much later: it turns out that usually, trainings for physical education teachers are more formal: they basically give out practical things, explain, and show, but do not do any exercises. But today, everything is different: the introductory, "conversational" part takes 40 minutes and then comes the practice and constant movement. To begin with, Elena Kun gives out all the tests with questions which physical education teachers answer: "Kyphosis of the spine is ..."; "the thoracic spine consists of ..." The highest score went to pensioner Muratbek Pshembaev, who teaches physical education at the Volgodonovsk School. And this isn’t surprising: two world champions were his students.

Elena Kun draws special attention to the psycho-emotional during the lesson: if you are not interested in what you are teaching, then the pupils will be the same. “The most important thing is motivation. Where is your positive attitude?" Rosa asks. "The coach should do the exercises, not even at 100-150%, but at 250%, so that the students will do what is needed at least 50%,” she continues.

"Physical education classes in our schools are focused on educational habits, while abroad - on health," says Rosa. "You should be doing exercise just as you brush your teeth: regularly. This should become a habit," adds Elena. They say that physical education teachers need to monitor the posture of their students: the process of formation of posture occurs between the ages of 6 to 17, and after that, it is impossible to correct the spinal column. And about the cardiovascular system, they say to not force children under the age of nine to run laps. It's harmful. Instead, ask them to play tag, skip rope, and play other games. During the lesson, it is necessary to monitor students’ heart rate. "I'm not talking about buying cardio monitors, you can measure students’ pulse according to Karvonen's formula. Remember that the frequency of beats should not go above 220. In a child, pulse restoration should occur in a minute,” Elena explains.

Questions from the audience:

“Is it possible to exercise if you have a hernia?”

“Can I answer?” another coach cries. “I had a hernia. I was advised to have an operation, but then I met a Chinese individual, who said that the hernia needs to be scared - that I need to load it. I started lifting the weights, and that helped me.

“For an acute period, you cannot exercise,” explains Elena Kuhn. “But if the hernia is at rest, then it is possible. But it's better to work with your own body weight.

After that, practical lessons begin. Using energetic, Latin-American music, Rosa shows Zumba, a dance-based fitness program that came about 14 years ago. The teachers try to perform the movements — it doesn’t turn out not very well, but it’s fun. This is indeed an option for a warm-up, and it is, in fact, a kind of miracle. It relaxes these simple, collected, and closed people. They dance and laugh. Almost like an internal confrontation, their expectation of a boring lesson vanishes.

Afterward, the teachers study different types of workouts, do stretching exercises, and learn proper running technique. "Under no circumstances should you run from the heel! And never run in flats!" Elena Kun shows how to properly go into plank position and do push-ups: "Children with poor eyesight can’t do push-ups, it is possible only from a distance - for example, from a step. "

The teachers diligently take notes. At the end of the day, they are given a task for the next day: to show an aerobic workout and study how muscles work. The next day, there are a few fewer teachers - maybe because it was Sunday — but all those who were really interested in training came. Everyone was excited, and there were even more questions for the trainers.

Elena and Rosa demonstrated how to use balls, skipping ropes, and handy things for exercises, like for example, half-liter bottles of water as replacements for dumbbells. Together with the teachers, they practiced stretching exercises. Elena talked about proper nutrition, and mentioned that the teacher must be interested in how the pupil eats: under no circumstances should one train on an empty stomach. The most heated discussion was the question of water: should one drink during the lesson? Elena convinces teachers that this is absolutely necessary, otherwise, the child will be dehydrated. The teachers argue that over the course of 45 minutes nothing terrible could happen, otherwise children will run after water all the time. Elena advises the teachers to talk with parents —  that on the day when of gym class, they put a bottle of water in their child’s backpack.

Teachers tell us that usually the temperature in the gym is between 8-11 degrees and ask how this affects intense classes. Elena makes a helpless gesture: "It's cold. In such conditions, you cannot do it. Convince directors to raise the temperature. "

Gym teachers of the Sarybinsk School of Erbol Bukin are usually called by their surname, and when they meet they always remember the series Happy Together. Erbol was born in Sarybi, who graduated from this school and says that "everything changed except for the rubber floor in the gym.” This year, the rubber was finally removed — the Coca-Cola Company paid for the new beautiful floor with a special coating. During the trainings, it was carefully washed twice a day. Here, since August 24, Erbol has begun lessons: he will train the volleyball team. For girls.

Erbol Bukin: "We have more girls than boys at school. For example, in one class, there are 13 girls and one boy. Therefore, it’s important to focus on girls. I think I will use aerobic exercises, stretching exercises. I liked the exercises using the abdominal press. I used to make pupils swing the press, but now I understand that I did it wrong, like squats. You know, we did not have anything before: we got two balls every three years. And then everything appeared at once: steps, skipping ropes, hoops, balls. For the first time, something was given to the gym."

Vyacheslav Savvatiev, a physical education teacher from the Vyacheslav School:

"I liked the aerobic warm-up, and the muscle-building and track-and-field exercises. Of course, they taught us only a little, since there wasn’t enough time, and there were a lot of people. For children of a younger and middle age, I want to put aerobic workouts to music. Now I need to work on the movements so that I know them automatically and don’t get confused. Physically, it was hard when we did the strength exercises. We almost never practice in such courses, and if we do, we just look and don’t participate. But here we were told and shown. We could practice on ourselves, so to speak. I would like to attend such trainings at least once a year."

Muratbek Pshembaev, physical education teacher of the school in the village of Volgodonovka:

“I am grateful to all the guys to everyone present here today —  and this is all schools. Many thanks to the coaches, to Coca-Cola! I learned a lot of new things: what muscles work under what loads, what to apply and where, what is accessible to schoolchildren. We will definitely pass this on. I learned a lot of useful things from the new athletics: running and jumping. I had heard about Zumba before, but I had never done it. During the practical classes, I realized that the most difficult thing was getting into the rhythm of it all. I will have younger classes this year, so I'll try to put together exercises for them with music.

Tatyana Evgenievna from the school of the village of Anar admits that they've never had coaches of this level:

- We were shown a lot of interesting exercises — for example, they gave us a ball and then an entire set of exercises with it. We performed the strength exercises ourselves; we were tired, but then there was such a high! It would be great if they conducted such trainings more often, since it’s difficult to learn everything at once. For example, yesterday, Rosa showed us Zumba, which was very interesting, but if we had gone through each exercise several times, we would have managed to better remember the movements. In my lessons, I use a more traditional form of warm-up — rhythmic gymnastics — but now I want to introduce Zumba, exercises with balls, with skipping ropes. Now we know that you use item and make a set of exercises out of it. It will be interesting for children. You’d think it’s hard to get a man to dance! Our physical education teachers are happy to do Zumba, take part, show some initiative, come up with lessons. At first, though, we were, of course, at a loss, but then we started to repeat the movements. I think that each of the coaches took something of their own out of this training. I already had thoughts on the first quarter: I'll do some track and field, and maybe I’ll do this for a warm-up. Coca-Cola gave us fitball balls, and I think we'll start training the girls with them. The pupils ask: how to get rid of their tummy, how to trim the sides, how to pump up the muscles, and then, and at the training, we realized that we don’t actually know how muscles work.

Elena Kun and Rosa Aldongarov conducted a training for school teachers for the first time and admit that it was an interesting experience.

"We were tasked with raising the sporting spirit of physical education teachers so that they were more motivated to inject new life into their lessons, and, in doing so, apply new knowledge so that children would be more interested in exercise. Only this way can sports and exercise become a habit that they carry into adulthood,” says Elena. “First of all, we focused on making it new and interesting for children and teachers. We used the absolute minimum inventory, and the set of exercises we developed was based on this. On the first day of the training, the teachers were somewhat passive; on the second day, they were already involved and interested. Apparently, they expected it to be as it usual is —  some boring training — and then on the second day, it was clear that they had gotten involved. They had a gleam in their eyes, they became interested. And when there is a payoff from the audience, we ourselves become interested in working. But two days it is not enough, they still need to read seriously go study physiology, the energy supply system of the body. They need to go through all the muscles in more detail, because I only gave the minimum. I hope that now they have gotten some kind of push, a spark, and that they will continue to develop.
