The Fruits of Labor

Azamat Azatov and Arafat Mamirbekov, future university instructors, registered their own non-commercial organization, “Support for Kazakhstani Youth” in the city of Semipalatinsk. But that’s where they stopped – they didn’t know how to develop the organization.

They became active participants at the start of the “Initiative for NGO Expert Development”, financed by Chevron. Azamat and Arafat attend nearly all project events – trainings, conferences, webinars, and meetings.

According to them, participation in the project has significantly contributed to their professional development. The activists gained knowledge in the sphere of NGO organizational and institutional development, and now they themselves are sharing their skills by conducting trainings and seminars in their region.

“Thanks to the knowledge we gained during the EFCA trainings, we were able to organize professional trainings on grant-writing skills, strategic planning, and fundraising for local NGOs,” notes Arafat Mamirbekov.

They renamed their fund, and altered both their approach and programming objectives. Their educational center “Erudite” has already become a popular platform for youth NGOs. Azamat and Arafat understand that many of the current problems faced by non-commercial organizations are the result of limited practical knowledge in grant-writing. For this reason, their center provides assistance to young NGOs to help them become more competitive. The center hosts oblast- and regional-level seminars and trainings on organizational management and NGO institutional development.

“We believe that the leaders and staff members of non-commercial organizations should understand that, if we are educated, disciplined, persistent, logical decision-makers, bold, and responsible, then success in project implementation is guaranteed and donors for long-term projects can be found,” said Azamat Azatov.
